Butcher Block Countertop FAQs
What is a butcher block?
What is a butcher block countertop? A butcher block is simply a countertop designed from solid hardwood strips or squares. It is used for cutting and chopping food, however, it is best known for bringing style and elegance to kitchens and other areas of the home.
If uncertain, our experts will help you choose the wood and style of butcher block that will best suit your countertops.
How to install butcher block countertops?
For proper butcher block countertop installation, you should first acclimate your butcher block to the conditions of your home. Next, prep your cabinets and install the blocking if your cabinet has an open top. If you instead have a cabinet with closed tops, you should install furring strips with ¼” plywood instead.
Next, prep your installation points, position the countertop appropriately for installation, and then condition, add mineral oil, or seal your butcher block. We recommend permanently sealing your butcher block using Waterlox® to seal the wood’s surface. If you have specific questions about the installation process, contact the professionals at Forever Joint Tops for assistance. Read more here about butcher block installation.

How to finish butcher block countertops?
We recommend using the Waterlox® brand. To apply Waterlox®, first apply the initial coat and let it dry overnight. For the second coat, simply repeat the first step and let the second coat dry until the third day. The third step is to lightly sand the surface of the butcher block with a 320-grit sandpaper to smooth out the finish. The fourth step is to apply the first coat of sealer, finish, satin, or high gloss. The following day, repeat the process of lightly sanding, and then apply the final coat of topcoat. Read more information here about finishing your butcher block.
How to clean butcher block countertops?
To get started with cleaning your butcher block countertops, you will need dish soap, a sponge, fine-grit sandpaper, lemon juice, white vinegar, salt, a small bowl, and a dish towel. You can use mild dish soap for cleaning. However, if something is stuck on the butcher block surface, scrape off any residue and scrub until the surface is clean. Use a nylon scraper or a plastic scrubbing sponge since they are less likely to cause cosmetic damage than a metal tool.
Then, rinse off the wood. Next, if there are any stains, work those out using a fine-grit sandpaper. You can also use table salt and lemon juice to remove stains. Next, use white vinegar to sanitize and help remove bacteria embedded in the wood by applying with a dish towel. Lastly, apply a mixture of salt and lemon juice, which acts as a disinfectant. Read more info here on our how to clean butcher block page.
How much do butcher block countertops cost?
You may be wondering what your butcher block countertop(s) will cost. As you have probably guessed, butcher block countertops cost will depend on size, style, edge grain vs end grain, and wood type, among other factors.
For example, walnut wood is more expensive than maple or oak. Increasing the thickness of your butcher block will also add an additional cost to your overall countertop price. Other factors may include specific sizes and sink cutouts. You’ll want to determine your budget and research wood type, thickness, cutouts, installation process, etc. For a quote, please contact Forever Joint Tops by giving us a call at 608-566-6903, or by visiting our order page.
