What thickness options are available for your butcher block tops?

We primarily run 1-1/2" thick butcher block tops, but we have the ability to run 2-1/4” which requires an extended lead time. If the request is for large volumes, we have the ability to manufacture up to 3” thick material.

Are your butcher block tops reversible?

No. All our butcher block tops are a one-face panel with the eased edge on the top side. The bottom side will allow minor defects such as knots in the panel.

Why are all your butcher block tops edge-grain?

We proudly produce edge grain butcher block tops because of its beauty and reliable durability compared to a face grain product. End grain butcher block is harder, but the significant price increase doesn’t justify the look for countertops in our opinion.

How far can I overhang my butcher block top with no support?

We recommend supports on the end if it goes over 8”, but it depends on the situation. The overhang on a butcher block island top/bar top is recommended at 6”. If the overhang is longer, we recommend using corbels to support the top.

Can you do sink cut-outs or mitered corners?

Due to the technical issues involved with this, we currently do not offer this service. Sink cut-outs and mitered corners are best handled at the jobsite by the installer.

What finish do you recommend for butcher block island tops and butcher block countertops?

To finish butcher block countertops, islands, or any other top you won’t be cutting on directly, we recommend Waterlox.

This is an extremely water-resistant sealer/finish that produces excellent results while being very easy to work with. This is a great product if your butcher block top is near a sink or any water source. Be sure to apply on the bottom side as well.

Other finishes can also do a great job, but be sure, whatever you apply is an oil-based product to avoid issues with the food-safe mineral oil that has already been applied.

Visit Finishing and Care for more information.

What finish do you recommend if cutting directly on the work surface?

We recommend using a Bee’s Wax or a Butcher Block Oil. This must be done regularly to keep your top from drying out and checking on the ends.

You should treat the bottom and ends of the surface as well. Some customers have sealed just the bottom with Waterlox, and then apply Butcher Block Oil on the top to make it easier to keep sealed.

Remember, it never hurts to do this more often! Keeping it well-seasoned is critical to avoid it from checking.

See Finishing and Care for further instructions.

How can you ensure precise custom butcher block sizing?

We customize your Forever Joint Top with our Cut-To-Size Program giving you the exact size butcher block top you require. This is done with one of our two Computer Numerical Control (CNC) saws, to remove the possibility of any mis-cuts caused by human error.

Our equipment holds the butcher block piece down so it can’t possibly move during cutting, unlike with hand-cutting that can be affected by any human shakiness, unstable or unlevel cutting surfaces, and more.

This excellent system first cuts the piece 1/16 inch larger than the desired size, then uses a router bit to skim that excess to not only ensure the perfect size, but also a smooth, attractive finished edge.

What are your size limitations? Depth limit? Length limit?

For length, we have the ability to make a 26” deep butcher block top up to 144” (12’) long. 36" deep butcher block tops can be made up to 96” (8').

Regarding depth, we have the ability to produce up to 36” wide in a one-piece butcher block panel. For larger panels we put butterfly joints on the joint so that two panels can be joined together. This allows us to make up to 70” wide panels.

If you would like more information on butterfly joints, please contact Isaac at isaac@fjtops.com or 608-566-6903.

What is edge-grain butcher block?

Edge grain butcher block (or “vertical grain”) uses the lumber in a way that creates a harder and more durable surface than a face grain surface. It is much less likely to bow or crack than face grain, especially with proper care.

Edge grain butcher block is produced by ripping kiln dried lumber and then gluing the strips back together on edge. This creates a top work surface with the growth rings exposed which creates a beautiful and much more durable top.

What is face-grain butcher block?

Face grain is what most table tops are made from. They are wider staves glued together and show more of the grain pattern on the surface. The downfall is that the work-surface is more susceptible to scratches and denting because it exposes the softer fiber of the wood. This is why we do not use face grain for our butcher block tops.

What is end-grain butcher block?

End grain is the porous end of lumber. The rings of tree growth are sometimes visible in parallel, stacked, or curved lines.

End grain surfaces are beautiful and durable, but end grain butcher block is more expensive. This makes end grain butcher block a good option for smaller butcher block products like our end grain butcher block cutting boards.

For large butcher block pieces, end grain butcher block durability versus edge grain butcher block is not substantial enough to justify the additional cost that would be incurred to our customers, so we use 100% edge grain butcher block for butcher block tops at Forever Joint Tops.

What is end-grain butcher block?

Our lead time is 2-3 weeks. In most cases your top will be shipped in 7-10 days.

Thicker tops and large volume orders require additional lead time.

If time is of the essence for your project, contact Isaac at isaac@fjtops.com or 608-566-6903 to inquire about potential expedited shipping options. Expedited shipping cost will depend on the size of your top(s) as well as delivery location.
